Indications
- Treatment of latent iron deficiency
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Treatment of macrocytic anaemia
- Nutritional anaemia of infants
- Anaemia due to excessive haemorrhage
- Anaemia associated with infections
- Anaemia associated with malignant disease
- Prevention of iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy
- Treatment of iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy
- Prevention of iron deficiency anaemia during lactation
- Prophylactic therapy of iron deficiency
Pharmacology
- Iron Polymaltose Complex as a polysaccharide-iron complex
- Facilitates controlled absorption of ferric iron
- Non-ionic ferric iron and polymaltose in a stable complex
- No release of free radicals
- No interaction with food components and other medications
- Faster rate utilization of iron in haemoglobin and myoglobin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage dependent upon extent of iron deficiency
- Adult dosage: 10 ml once or twice daily
- Children (6-12 years) dosage: 10 ml daily
- Children (2-6 years) dosage: 5 ml daily
- Premature infants & Infants dosage: 3.33 mg of elemental iron/kg body weight
Interaction
- No observed interactions
- Unlikely to have ionic interactions with foodstuff components and concomitantly administered medicaments
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in conditions with risk of iron overload
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to iron or any other ingredients of the syrup
Side Effects
- Well tolerated
- Possible side effects: nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Careful assessment of potential risk versus benefits during first trimester
- Iron therapy may be indicated for the remainder of pregnancy under physician's advice
- Iron excreted in breast milk in not clinically significant concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Possible initial side effects: epigastric pain, diarrhea, vomiting
- Metabolic acidosis, convulsions, coma after apparent recovery
- Emergency measures required for overdose
