Indications

  • Treatment of latent iron deficiency

Pharmacology

  • Iron Polymaltose Complex as a polysaccharide-iron complex
  • Facilitates controlled absorption of ferric iron
  • Non-ionic ferric iron and polymaltose in a stable complex
  • No release of free radicals
  • No interaction with food components and other medications
  • Faster rate utilization of iron in haemoglobin and myoglobin synthesis

Dosage & Administration

  • Dosage dependent upon extent of iron deficiency
  • Adult dosage: 10 ml once or twice daily
  • Children (6-12 years) dosage: 10 ml daily
  • Children (2-6 years) dosage: 5 ml daily
  • Premature infants & Infants dosage: 3.33 mg of elemental iron/kg body weight

Interaction

  • No observed interactions
  • Unlikely to have ionic interactions with foodstuff components and concomitantly administered medicaments

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in conditions with risk of iron overload
  • Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to iron or any other ingredients of the syrup

Side Effects

  • Well tolerated
  • Possible side effects: nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Careful assessment of potential risk versus benefits during first trimester
  • Iron therapy may be indicated for the remainder of pregnancy under physician's advice
  • Iron excreted in breast milk in not clinically significant concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

  • Possible initial side effects: epigastric pain, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Metabolic acidosis, convulsions, coma after apparent recovery
  • Emergency measures required for overdose

  • Possible symptoms: epigastric pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, metabolic acidosis, convulsions, coma
  • Emergency medical attention required
  • Gastric lavage and general supportive measures
