Indications
- Treatment of latent iron deficiency and iron deficiency anaemia
- Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy and lactation
- Prophylactic therapy of iron deficiency
- Nutritional anaemia of infants
- Anaemia due to excessive haemorrhage and anaemia associated with infections and malignant disease
Pharmacology
- Iron Polymaltose Complex is a polysaccharide-iron complex
- Used in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia
- Facilitates controlled absorption of iron
- Non-ionic ferric iron and polymaltose in a stable complex
- No release of free radicals
- Does not interact with food components and other medications
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage dependent upon extent of iron deficiency
- Adults: 10 ml once or twice daily
- Children (6-12 years): 10 ml daily
- Children (2-6 years): 5 ml daily
- Premature infants & Infants: 3.33 mg of elemental iron/kg body weight
Interaction
- No observed interactions due to complex bound iron
- Unlikely to interact with foodstuff components and concomitantly administered medicaments
Contraindications
- Risk of iron overload conditions
- Hypersensitivity to iron or any other ingredients of the syrup
Side Effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Diarrhoea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Requires careful assessment of potential risk versus benefits during first trimester of pregnancy
- Iron excreted in breast milk but not in clinically significant concentrations
Precautions & Warnings
- Initial side effects may include epigastric pain, diarrhea, and vomiting
- Should seek medical attention in case of overdose
Overdose Effects
- Initial symptoms include epigastric pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting
- May include metabolic acidosis, convulsions, and coma after recovery
