Indications
- Treatment of iron overload patients with thalassemia major
- Initiated and maintained by a physician experienced in thalassemia treatment
Pharmacology
- Chelating agent with an affinity for ferric ion (iron III)
- Forms stable 3:1 complexes with ferric ions
- Lower binding affinity for metals such as copper, aluminum, and zinc
Dosage & Administration
- For adults and children over 6 years
- Oral administration in doses of 25mg/kg three times daily
- Maximum recommended daily dose of 100mg/kg
- Administration as directed by a registered physician
Interaction
- Caution with concurrent use of Feripon and Vitamin C
- Avoid concurrent use with aluminum-containing antacids
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal disorders: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
- Reddish brown discoloration of urine
- Other reported adverse effects: arthralgia, increased liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women
Precautions & Warnings
- May cause neutropenia, including agranulocytosis
- Monitoring of neutrophil count recommended, especially in patients with hepatic or renal impairment
