Indications
- Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
- Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy
Pharmacology
- Essential for haemoglobin formation
- Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
- Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron deficiency anaemia
- Causes of iron deficient anemias
- Deficiency of Folic acid during pregnancy
- Rapid production of red blood cells after treatment with iron
- Absorption in the proximal small intestine
- Replenishment of iron deficiency
- Synthesis of haemoglobin
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet daily
- Twice daily if necessary
- Start at first antenatal consultation in pregnancy
- Continues for 3 months after delivery
- Preferably taken before meals
- May be taken after meals in case of gastro-intestinal disturbances
Interaction
- Diminished absorption of iron salts and tetracycline when taken concomitantly
- Administration timing when using iron salt and tetracycline
- Decreased absorption of iron salts in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
- Reduction of effects of penicillamine by iron salts
- Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by co-trimoxazole
- Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by administration of folate
Contraindications
- Pernicious anaemia
- Anaemia other than those due to iron deficiency
- Inhibition of absorption by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

- Nausea

- Gastro-intestinal symptoms
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Precautions & Warnings
- Undesirable administration during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Investigation of anaemia if developed despite prophylaxis
- Poor absorption of Fe in some post-gastrectomy patients
- Care when treating patients with peptic ulcer
Overdose Effects
- Gastric lavage
- Symptomatic treatment
- Chelating agent administration
- Excess free iron elimination
- Milk and/or 5% solution of sodium bicarbonate administration
