Description

  • Iron and folic acid combined tablet for prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
  • Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

  • Essential for haemoglobin formation
  • Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
  • Treats and prophylaxis of Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Prevents megaloblastic anaemia during pregnancy
  • Rapid production of red blood cells may deplete body folate if there is inadequate intake

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: One tablet daily
  • Recommended to start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery
  • Preferably taken before meals

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with tetracycline
  • Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
  • Reduced effects of penicillamine
  • Co-trimoxazole may inhibit megaloblastic haemopoiesis
  • Reduced serum anticonvulsant levels by administration of folate

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia and other anaemias not due to iron deficiency
  • Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisilicate and Antacids containing carbonate

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastro-intestinal symptoms
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

  • Undesirable during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Investigate further if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
  • Some post-gastrectomy patients show poor absorption of Fe
  • Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage if possible within four hours of overdosage
  • Symptomatic treatment as necessary
  • Administration of chelating agent like desferrioxamine
  • Milk and/or 5% sodium bicarbonate helpful
