Indications

Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

Iron is necessary for haemoglobin formation and oxidative processes
Deficiency of Folic acid causes megaloblastic anaemia
Absorbed iron is used to synthesize haemoglobin in bone marrow

Dosage & Administration

Adults: One tablet daily
Pregnant women should start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery
Preferably taken before meals

Interaction

Absorption of iron salts and tetracycline is diminished when taken together
Iron salts absorption is decreased with antacids or tea
Iron salts reduce the effects of penicillamine

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with pernicious anaemia and anaemia other than those due to iron deficiency
Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacids containing carbonate

Diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

Irolic is undesirable during the first trimester of pregnancy
Care is needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

Patients who have taken an overdose should have gastric lavage performed
Administration of chelating agent such as desferrioxamine is necessary
