Description

  • Feroson is indicated for the prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy and for the prevention of megaloblastic anemia of pregnancy. It replenishes iron deficiency and aids in the synthesis of hemoglobin. The tablets are recommended for adult women during pregnancy to be taken daily, preferably before meals, for a specified duration after delivery. The tablet should be administered with caution and certain contraindications must be considered.

Pharmacology

  • Essential for haemoglobin formation
  • Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Replenishes iron deficiency
  • Aids in the synthesis of hemoglobin
  • Replenishes Folic acid deficiency and prevents megaloblastic anaemia

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: One tablet daily
  • In pregnancy, recommended to start at first antenatal consolation and continue for 3 months after delivery
  • Preferably taken before meals
  • May be taken twice daily when necessary

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption with concomitant use of iron salts and tetracycline
  • Reduced absorption with antacids or when taken with tea
  • Reduces the effects of penicillamine
  • Inhibits megaloblastic haemopoiesis with co-trimoxazole
  • Reduces serum anticonvulsant levels when administered with folate

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with pernicious anaemia and other types of anaemia not due to iron deficiency
  • Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastro-intestinal symptoms
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

  • Undesirable in the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Investigate further if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
  • Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage should be performed if possible
  • Symptomatic treatment may be necessary
  • Administration of a chelating agent such as desferrioxamine
  • Milk and/or 5% solution of sodium bicarbonate by mouth is helpful
