Description

Prophylaxis and treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy
Essential for haemoglobin formation and oxidative processes
Replenishes iron deficiency
Absorbed in the proximal small intestine particularly the duodenum

Dosage & Administration

One tablet daily for adults
Can be taken before or after meals
Recommended to start at first antenatal consultation in pregnancy
Continue for 3 months after delivery

Interaction

Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with tetracycline
Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
Reduction of penicillamine effects by iron salts
Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by co-trimoxazole
Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by folate administration

Contraindications

Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia and anaemia not due to iron deficiency
Inhibited absorption by magnesium trisillicate and antacids containing carbonate

Precautions & Warnings

Undesirable in the first trimester of pregnancy
Investigate further if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis

Overdose Effects

Gastric lavage performed for overdose
Symptomatic treatment as necessary
Administration of chelating agent like desferrioxamine to eliminate excess free iron
