Purpose
- Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
- Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy
Pharmacology
- Essential for haemoglobin formation
- Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
- Absorbed in the proximal small intestine
- Replenishes iron deficiency and arrests anaemia process
DosageAdministration
- Adults: One tablet daily
- In pregnancy, recommended to start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery
- Preferably taken before meals, or after meals if there are gastrointestinal disturbances
Interaction
- Absorption of iron salts and tetracycline is diminished when taken concomitantly
- Iron salt absorption decreased in presence of antacids or when taken with tea
- Reduction of anticonvulsant levels by administration of folate
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia and anaemia other than those due to iron deficiency
- Inhibited absorption by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

- Administer chelating agent like desferrioxamine to eliminate excess free iron
