Indications

Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

Essential constituent for haemoglobin formation
Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron deficiency anaemia
Causes of iron deficiency anaemias
Deficiency of Folic acid in pregnancy
Absorption of Iron and Folic acid in small intestine

Dosage & Administration

Adult dosage of one tablet daily
Twice daily dosage when necessary
Recommended start of Irolic tablet in pregnancy
Preferably taken before meals

Interaction

Diminished absorption of iron salts with tetracycline
Iron salt administration timing with tetracycline
Decreased absorption of iron salts with antacids or tea
Reduced effects of penicillamine by iron salts
Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by Co-trimoxazole
Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by folate administration

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with pernicious anaemia
Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

Undesirable administration during first trimester of pregnancy
Investigation upon development of anaemia despite prophylaxis
Poor absorption in post-gastrectomy patients

Symptomatic treatment for overdosage
Chelating agent administration for excess free iron elimination
