Indications

Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: One tablet daily
  • Possibility of taking one tablet twice daily
  • Initiation during pregnancy
  • Duration of use: 3 months post-delivery
  • Preferable intake before meals
  • Possible intake after meals in case of gastro-intestinal disturbances

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption of iron salts with tetracycline
  • Timing of administration with tetracycline
  • Effect of antacids and tea on iron salts absorption
  • Reduction of penicillamine effects by iron salts
  • Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by co-trimoxazole
  • Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by folate administration

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia
  • Inhibition of absorption by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

Precautions & Warnings

  • Undesirable use during first trimester of pregnancy
  • Investigation if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
  • Poor absorption in post-gastrectomy patients
  • Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage
  • Symptomatic treatment
  • Administration of chelating agent like desferrioxamine
  • Use of milk and/or 5% solution of sodium bicarbonate as supportive measures
