Indications

Pharmacology

  • Essential for hemoglobin formation
  • Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
  • Treatment and prophylaxis of iron deficiency anemia
  • Prevention of megaloblastic anemia
  • Absorbed in the proximal small intestine
  • Replenishes iron deficiency
  • Synthesizes hemoglobin

Dosage & Administration

  • One tablet daily for adults
  • Twice daily when necessary
  • Recommended to start at first antenatal consultation in pregnancy
  • Continues for 3 months after delivery
  • Preferably taken before meals
  • Can be taken after meals if gastrointestinal disturbances occur

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with tetracycline
  • Iron salts should be administered 3 hours before or 2 hours after tetracycline if both drugs are required
  • Decreased absorption in the presence of antacids or when taken with tea
  • Reduces the effects of penicillamine
  • Inhibits megaloblastic hematopoiesis when taken with co-trimoxazole
  • Reduces serum anticonvulsant levels when administered with folate

Contraindications

  • Pernicious anemia
  • Anemia other than due to iron deficiency
  • Inhibited absorption by magnesium trisilicate and carbonated antacids

  • Diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

  • Undesirable during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Investigate further if anemia develops despite prophylaxis
  • Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage should be performed
  • Symptomatic treatment as necessary
  • Chelating agent like desferrioxamine should be administered to eliminate excess free iron
