Indications

Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

Essential for haemoglobin formation
Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
Treatment and prophylaxis of iron deficiency anaemia
Causes of deficiency: chronic hemorrhage, nutritional deficiency, pregnancy, parasite infestation, malabsorption of iron

Dosage & Administration

Adults: One tablet daily
Pregnancy: Started at first antenatal consultation and continues for 3 months after delivery
Preferably taken before meals
May be taken twice daily if necessary

Interaction

Diminished absorption when taken with tetracycline
Reduced absorption with antacids or when taken with tea
Reduction of penicillamine effects by iron salts
Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by co-trimoxazole
Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by administration of folate

Contraindications

Pernicious anaemia
Anaemia other than those due to iron deficiency
Inhibited absorption by magnesium trisillicate and antacid containing carbonate

Precautions & Warnings

Undesirable in the first trimester of pregnancy
Investigation if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis
Poor absorption in post-gastrectomy patients
Caution when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

Gastric lavage within four hours of the overdosage
Symptomatic treatment as necessary
Administration of a chelating agent like desferrioxamine
Giving milk and/or 5% solution of sodium bicarbonate by mouth
