Indications

Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

Iron is essential for haemoglobin formation and oxidative processes. Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy can cause megaloblastic anaemia. Iron and Folic acid supplements replenish iron deficiency.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: One tablet daily. In pregnancy, recommended to start at first antenatal consultation and continue for 3 months after delivery. Preferably taken before meals.

Interaction

Absorption of iron salts and tetracycline is diminished when taken concomitantly. Iron salts absorption is decreased when taken with antacids or tea. Iron salts reduce the effects of penicillamine.

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with pernicious anaemia and anaemia not due to iron deficiency. Absorption inhibited by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacids with carbonate.

Side Effects

Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, gastro-intestinal symptoms, constipation, and diarrhea.

Precautions & Warnings

Administration during the first trimester of pregnancy may be undesirable. Investigations required if anaemia develops despite prophylaxis. Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer.

Overdose Effects

Patients who have taken an overdose should have gastric lavage performed. Additionally, symptomatic treatment and elimination of excess free iron with a chelating agent is necessary.
