Medicine Details

Indications

  • Prophylaxis and treatment of Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy
  • Prevention of megaloblastic anaemia of pregnancy

Pharmacology

  • Iron essential for haemoglobin formation
  • Folic acid deficiency causes megaloblastic anaemia
  • Iron and Folic acid absorbed in proximal small intestine
  • Ferrous Fumerate & Folic acid supplements replenish iron deficiency

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: one tablet daily
  • Recommended to start at first antenatal consolation and continue for 3 months after delivery
  • Preferably taken before meals

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption when taken concomitantly with tetracycline
  • Decreased absorption with antacids or when taken with tea
  • Reduction of penicillamine effects by iron salts
  • Inhibition of megaloblastic haemopoiesis by co-trimoxazole
  • Reduction of serum anticonvulsant levels by administration of folate

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in pernicious anaemia and anaemia not due to iron deficiency
  • Inhibited absorption by Magnesium trisillicate and Antacid containing carbonate

Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastro-intestinal symptoms
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea

Precautions & Warnings

  • Undesirable during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Poor absorption in some post-gastrectomy patients
  • Care needed when treating patients with peptic ulcer

Overdose Effects

  • Gastric lavage if possible within four hours of overdosage
  • Symptomatic treatment as necessary
  • Chelating agent desferrioxamine to eliminate excess free iron
