Contraindications

  • Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
  • Patients with anaemias not produced by iron deficiency unless iron deficiency is also present

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Dose-related nausea and epigastric pain

Precautions & Warnings

  • Chelates with antacid and tetracycline
  • Impaired absorption if taken concurrently

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of overdosage include epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, haematemesis, and circulatory collapse
  • Potential for severe complications like encephalopathy, acute hepatic necrosis, and acute renal failure
  • Treatment with desferrioxamine
  • Serum iron level monitoring
