Indications

• Treatment and prophylaxis of iron deficiency
• Treatment and prophylaxis of folic acid deficiency
• Use during pregnancy and lactation

Description

• Capsule preparation of ferrous sulfate and folic acid
• Timed release form to prevent gastric side effects
• Ensures maximum absorption of iron

Pharmacology

• Essential for haemoglobin formation
• Necessary for oxidative processes of living tissues
• Iron absorption primarily from duodenum and upper jejunum
• Ferrous salt form absorbed more readily than ferric salt form
• Increased requirements during pregnancy
• Folic acid important for cell division
• Adequate folic acid required for normal erythropoiesis

Dosage & Administration

• 1 capsule daily throughout pregnancy and lactation
• Higher dose may be needed for some patients

Interaction

• Diminished absorption with concomitant use of iron salts and tetracyclines
• Decreased absorption with magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids

Contraindications

• Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
• Patients with anaemias not produced by iron deficiency

Side Effects

• Gastrointestinal irritation
• Dose-related nausea and epigastric pain

Precautions & Warnings

• Iron chelates with antacids and tetracycline
• Impaired absorption if taken concurrently

Overdose Effects

• Symptoms include epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and haematemesis
• Potential development of encephalopathy, acute hepatic necrosis, and acute renal failure
• Timed release capsule presentation may delay excessive absorption
• Gastric lavage followed by desferrioxamine introduction and monitoring of serum iron levels recommended
