Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration

Interaction

  • Diminished absorption with tetracyclines
  • Diminished absorption with antacids

Contraindications

  • With repeated blood transfusions
  • Iron deficiency absent
  • Inappropriate for anaemias not from iron deficiency

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritation
  • Dose-related nausea
  • Dose-related epigastric pain

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid concurrent use with antacids or tetracycline
  • Avoid tetracycline during pregnancy

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms: epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, haematemesis
  • Symptoms: circulatory collapse, encephalopathy, hepatic necrosis, renal failure
  • Delay in iron absorption with timed release capsule
  • Treatment: gastric lavage, desferrioxamine introduction
  • Monitoring of serum iron levels
  • Supportive and symptomatic measures
