Description
- A timed-release capsule containing ferrous sulfate and folic acid for the treatment and prevention of iron and folic acid deficiency, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
Dosage
- 1 capsule daily throughout pregnancy and lactation, with the possibility of higher doses for some patients based on dietary or other factors
Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of iron and folic acid deficiency, particularly during pregnancy and lactation
Contraindications
- Patients receiving repeated blood transfusions
- Patients with anemia not caused by iron deficiency unless iron deficiency is also present
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal irritation due to astringent properties of iron salts
- Dose-related nausea and epigastric pain
Precautions & Warnings
- Chelation with antacids and tetracyclines may impair absorption
- Contraindication of tetracycline during pregnancy
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms include epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and circulatory collapse
- May lead to encephalopathy, acute hepatic necrosis, and acute renal failure in severe cases
- Timed-release capsule presentation of ferrous sulfate may delay excessive absorption and allow time for appropriate countermeasures
Interaction
- Diminished absorption when taken concurrently with tetracyclines
- Decreased absorption with magnesium trisilicate-containing antacids
Pharmacology
- Essential for haemoglobin formation and oxidative processes
- Primary absorption from duodenum and upper jejunum
- Ferrous salt form absorbed three times more readily than ferric salt form
- Increased requirements during pregnancy and menstruation
- Folic acid necessary for cell division and erythropoiesis
