Description

  • Oral iron, folic acid, and zinc preparation for the treatment of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency

Indications

  • Prophylaxis of iron deficiency, supplementary zinc and iron during pregnancy and anemia

Pharmacology

  • Combination of Ferrous Ascorbate, Folic Acid & Zinc for iron replenishment, red blood cell formation, enhanced iron absorption, and nutritional support

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult & Elderly: One tablet a day before or after meal, Pediatric patients: Safety and effectiveness not established

Interaction

  • Chelates with tetracycline, interferes with oral tetracycline antibiotics absorption, occasional gastrointestinal discomfort may be minimized by taking with meals, impaired iron absorption by concurrent administrations of penicillamine and antacid, risk of zinc accumulation in renal failure patients

Contraindications

  • Haemolytic anaemia, hypersensitivity to components, increased body iron content

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects including epigastric pain, nausea, constipation, vomiting, diarrhoea, heartburn, allergic sensitization

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Contact physician if pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, avoid administration in first trimester unless definite evidence of iron deficiency, justified prophylaxis during remainder of pregnancy when zinc supplementation is required

Precautions & Warnings

  • Care for patients who may develop iron overload, failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anemia

Overdose Effects

  • Variable clinical course, symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tarry stools, hypotension, shock, coma, etc.
