Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency
- Specifically during pregnancy and lactation
Composition
- Ferrous Sulphate BP 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron)
- Folic Acid BP 500 mcg
- Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc)
Dosage & Administration
- Adult or Elderly: 1 capsule daily
- In severe cases, 2 capsules daily may be required
- Children aged over 1 year: 1 capsule daily
- Capsule may be opened and pellets mixed with soft cool food, not to be chewed
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to components of the product
- Iron overload
Side Effects
- Dark stools during iron therapy
- Nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea
- Gastrointestinal upset from Zinc
- Rare reports of allergic reactions
- Timed-release capsules designed to reduce gastrointestinal irritation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid using any drug during first trimester of pregnancy if possible
- Definite evidence required for Iron deficiency in first trimester
- Supplementary Zinc and Folic Acid justified during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Take care in patients at risk of Iron overload
- Monitor patients with haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, or red cell aplasia
- Investigate failure to respond to treatment for other causes of anaemia
- Potential interactions with tetracycline, penicillamine, antacids
- Separate administration of products if potential interactions exist
- Increased risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure
Overdose Effects
- Iron overdosage dangerous, requires immediate attention
- Gastric lavage, induced vomiting if necessary
- Oral desferrioxamine recommended
- Intravenous desferrioxamine if serum Iron levels over specified limits
- Zinc Sulphate in gross overdosage is corrosive
- Symptomatic and supportive measures required
