Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron deficiency
  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Folic Acid deficiency
  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Zinc deficiency
  • Specifically for pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Each capsule contains Ferrous Sulphate BP 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron)
  • Each capsule contains Folic Acid BP 500 mcg
  • Each capsule contains Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc)

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage for adults: 1 capsule daily
  • In more severe cases, 2 capsules daily may be required for adults
  • Recommended dosage for children over 1 year: 1 capsule daily
  • Capsule may be opened and pellets mixed with soft cool food for children

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the components of the product
  • Patients with iron overload

  • Zinc-induced gastrointestinal upset

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible
  • Iron supplementation in first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency
  • Supplementary Zinc and Folic acid justified during remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Care in patients prone to develop Iron overloads (e.g., haemochromatosis)
  • Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anaemia
  • Possible interactions with tetracycline, penicillamine, antacids
  • Reduced absorption of Zinc in presence of Iron
  • Reduced absorption of Iron in presence of penicillamine and antacids
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Iron overdosage dangerous, particularly in children
  • Immediate attention required for Iron overdosage
  • Gastric lavage and vomiting induction procedures
  • Oral desferrioxamine recommended in Iron overdosage cases
  • Zinc Sulphate in gross overdose is corrosive
  • Symptoms of Zinc overdose include gastrointestinal irritation, haemorrhage, mucosa corrosion, and possible stricture formation
  • Avoid gastric lavage or emesis in Zinc overdose situations
  • Chelating agents such as Dimercaprol, Penicillamine, or Edetic Acid recommended for Zinc overdose
  • Symptomatic and supportive measures recommended for overdose
  • Timed-release capsules may delay excessive absorption of Iron and Zinc
