Description

Diverin is indicated for functional bowel/irritable bowel syndrome, urinary incontinence, infantile colic, GIT spasm, colicky abdominal pain, diverticulitis, and abdominal colic. It is an antispasmodic and anticholinergic agent that relieves smooth muscle spasm of the gastrointestinal tract and works at specific receptors, called cholinergic receptors. The dosage for oral forms varies for adults and children, and injectable dosage form is recommended for adults only. Side effects may include insomnia, mydriasis, urinary hesitancy, and palpitations. The medication falls under Pregnancy Category B and should be used cautiously during lactation. Precautions should be taken in patients with various health conditions, and overdose effects may include headache, nausea, and blurred vision. Diverin belongs to the therapeutic class of anticholinergics and anti-spasmodics and should be stored below 30°C, away from light and moisture.

Pharmacology

Antispasmodic and anticholinergic agent that relieves smooth muscle spasm of the gastrointestinal tract by working at specific cholinergic receptors.

Dosage administration

  • Oral forms:
    • Adults: 10 to 20 mg three times a day
    • Children over 6 months: 5 to 10 mg three times a day
  • Injectable form:
    • Adults: Intramuscular injection. Not for intravenous use. The recommended intramuscular dose is 80 mg daily (in 4 equally divided doses)
  • Additional notes: Oral dicycloverine Hydrochloride should be started as soon as possible and the intramuscular form should not be used for periods longer than 1 or 2 days. Dose for children must be determined by the doctor.

Precautions warnings

Use with caution in patients with autonomic neuropathy, hepatic or renal disease, ulcerative colitis, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac tachyarrhythmia, hiatal hernia, known or suspected prostatic hypertrophy.

Overdose effects

Toxic reaction seldom occurs with dicycloverine, however signs and symptoms of overdosage include headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, dilated pupils, hot, dry skin, dizziness, dryness of the mouth, difficulty in swallowing, and CNS stimulation.
