Indications

Treatment of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

Ferrous Sulphate BP 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron)
Folic Acid BP 500 mcg
Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc)

Dosage & Administration

Adult or Elderly: 1 capsule daily, 2 capsules daily in severe cases
Children (over 1 year): 1 capsule daily, can be mixed with soft cool food

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components
Iron overload

Side Effects

Dark stools
Nausea
Vomiting
Discomfort
Constipation
Diarrhoea

Rare reports of allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

Avoid use during first trimester if possible
Definite evidence of Iron deficiency required for administration during first trimester
Justified use of Zinc and Folic acid during remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

Care in patients prone to Iron overloads
Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anaemia
Potential interactions with tetracycline, penicillamine, antacids
Reduced absorption of Zinc in presence of Iron
Reduced absorption of Iron in presence of penicillamine and antacids
Risk of Zinc accumulation in renal failure patients

Overdose Effects

Iron overdosage dangerous, particularly in children, requires immediate attention
Gastric lavage, induced vomiting, oral desferrioxamine for treatment
Symptomatic and supportive measures required
Zinc Sulphate corrosive in gross over dosage, leading to gastrointestinal irritation
Symptomatic treatment with demulcents and chelating agents
