Indications

Treatment of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

Ferrous Sulphate BP: 150 mg (equivalent to 47 mg Iron)

Folic Acid BP: 500 mcg

Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP: 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg Zinc)

Dosage & Administration

Adult or Elderly: 1-2 capsules daily
Children: 1 capsule daily (aged over 1 year)

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to the components
Iron overload

Side Effects

Dark stools
Nausea
Vomiting
Discomfort
Constipation
Diarrhoea
Gastrointestinal upset
Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

Avoid use in the first trimester if possible
Definite evidence of Iron deficiency required for first-trimester administration
Supplementary Zinc and Folic acid justified in the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

Care in patients prone to Iron overloads
Failure to respond to treatment may indicate other causes of anaemia
Potential interactions with tetracycline, penicillamine, antacids
Reduced absorption of Zinc in the presence of Iron
Reduced absorption of Iron by penicillamine and antacids
Separate administration of each product by several hours to reduce potential interactions
Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

Danger of Iron overdosage, particularly in children
Immediate attention required
Gastric lavage or induced vomiting in early stages
Oral desferrioxamine and demulcent
Intravenous desferrioxamine if serum Iron levels are high
Corrosive effects of zinc in gross overdosage
Symptomatic and supportive measures
Timed-release capsule may delay excessive absorption of Iron and Zinc
