Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of iron, folic acid, and zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Each capsule contains 150mg Ferrous Sulphate BP (equivalent to 47mg Iron)
  • Each capsule contains 500mcg Folic Acid BP
  • Each capsule contains 61.80mg Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate USP (equivalent to 22.50mg Zinc)

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult or Elderly: 1 capsule daily, 2 capsules daily for severe cases
  • Children (aged over 1 year): 1 capsule daily, can be opened and mixed with soft cool food

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the components
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Dark stools
  • Nausea
  • Gastrointestinal irritation (anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea)
  • Gastrointestinal upset from zinc
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during the first trimester should be avoided if possible
  • Definite evidence of iron deficiency required for administration during the first trimester
  • Folic acid is justified during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Care in patients prone to iron overloads (e.g., haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia)
  • Failure to respond to treatment may require further investigation
  • Potential interactions with tetracycline, penicillamine, antacids
  • Potential reduced absorption of zinc in the presence of iron
  • Risk of zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Iron overdosage is dangerous, particularly in children and requires immediate attention
  • Gastric lavage and oral desferrioxamine recommended
  • Zinc Sulphate over dosage symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, haemorrhage, corrosion, possibly stricture formation
  • Symptomatic and supportive measures required
