Description

  • This capsule is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
  • The timed-release capsule contains Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate.

Composition

  • Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician.

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of its components
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea may occur.
  • Patients may complain of dark stool.
  • Rarely there may be allergic reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible.
  • Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency during the remainder of pregnancy is justified where inadequate diet calls for supplementary Zinc and Folic acid.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care should be taken in patients with Iron overload states, such as haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, or red blood cell aplasia.
  • Failure to respond to the treatment requires further investigations to exclude other causes of anemia.
  • In patients with renal failure there may be the risk of Zinc accumulation.

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures.
