Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Pharmacology

  • Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content
  • High bioavailability and low toxicity

Dosage & Administration

  • One Capsule daily before food

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa and penecillamine
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any component
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation and diarrhoea
  • Dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during first trimester should be avoided if possible
  • Definite evidence of Iron deficiency required for first trimester use
  • Justified during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care in patients with Iron overload states
  • Failure to response to treatment requires further investigations
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
