Indications
- Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation
Composition
- Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
- Folic acid BP 500 microgram
- Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)
Pharmacology
- Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
- Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content
- High bioavailability and low toxicity
Dosage & Administration
- One Capsule daily before food
Interaction
- Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa and penecillamine
- Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any component
- Iron overload
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation and diarrhoea
- Dark stool
- Rare allergic reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during first trimester should be avoided if possible
- Definite evidence of Iron deficiency required for first trimester use
- Justified during the remainder of pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Special care in patients with Iron overload states
- Failure to response to treatment requires further investigations
- Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure
Overdose Effects
- Decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
