Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency
  • Especially during pregnancy and lactation

Composition

  • Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Pharmacology

  • Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content
  • High bioavailability and low toxicity

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: One capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • Decreases the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penecillamine
  • Interacts with antiepileptics, affecting plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin and primidone

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any of its components
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Possibility of dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible
  • Definite evidence of Iron deficiency required for administration during the first trimester
  • Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency justified during the rest of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care needed in patients with Iron overload states
  • Failure to respond to treatment requires further investigations
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms including decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak, rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures
