Title and Composition

  • Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Capsules
  • Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency especially during pregnancy and lactation

Pharmacology

  • Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • Contains Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of certain antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics and may reduce plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any component
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Possibility of dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions
  • Carbonyl Iron pellets reduce gastrointestinal irritations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use of any drug during the first trimester of pregnancy should be avoided if possible
  • Administration of Iron during the first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency
  • Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency with Zinc and Folic acid is justified during the remainder of pregnancy if diet is inadequate

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care in patients with Iron overload states such as haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, or red blood cell aplasia
  • Failure to respond to treatment requires further investigations to exclude other causes of anaemia
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in patients with renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms of Carbonyl Iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
