Composition

Indications

  • Treatment and prophylaxis of Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc deficiency during pregnancy and lactation

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: One capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Pharmacology

  • Combined preparation of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • High bioavailability and low toxicity for safe and effective iron supplementation

Interaction

  • Decreases absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penecillamine
  • Interacts with antiepileptics, affecting plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Possibility of dark stool
  • Rare allergic reactions
  • Carbonyl Iron pellets reduce gastrointestinal irritations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use in first trimester if possible
  • Definite evidence required for Iron deficiency in first trimester
  • Justified prophylaxis for Iron deficiency with inadequate diet during the remainder of pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care in patients with Iron overload states
  • Investigate failure to respond to treatment
  • Risk of Zinc accumulation in renal failure

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
