Indications

Composition

  • Elemental iron 50 mg (As carbonyl iron INN)
  • Folic acid BP 500 microgram
  • Zinc sulphate monohydrate USP 61.80 mg (equivalent to 22.50 mg zinc)

Pharmacology

  • Combined timed-release capsule of Carbonyl Iron, Folic Acid, and Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate
  • Carbonyl Iron with not less than 98% Iron content
  • High bioavailability and low toxicity of Carbonyl Iron for safer and more effective iron supplementation

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult: One Capsule daily before food or as directed by the physician

Interaction

  • Carbonyl Iron decreases the absorption of certain antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, and methyldopa
  • Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics, affecting plasma concentrations of phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to any component
  • Iron overload

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal irritations such as nausea, anorexia, vomiting, discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Rare allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during first trimester should be avoided if possible
  • Administration of Iron during the first trimester requires definite evidence of Iron deficiency
  • Prophylaxis of Iron deficiency justified during the remainder of pregnancy if inadequate diet calls for supplementary Zinc and Folic acid

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special care for patients with Iron overload states
  • Failure to respond to treatment requires further investigations
  • In patients with renal failure, risk of Zinc accumulation

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, and seizures
