Indications
- Treatment of iron deficiency
- Prophylaxis of iron, folic acid, zinc, vitamin-B complex, and vitamin-C deficiency
- Specifically for pregnancy and lactation
Composition
- Each capsule contains 50mg Elemental Iron (as Carbonyl iron) INN
- Each capsule contains 22.50mg Zinc (as Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate BP)
- Each capsule contains 0.5mg Folic Acid BP
- Each capsule contains 10mg Nicotinamide BP
- Each capsule contains 2mg Riboflavin BP
- Each capsule contains 1mg Pyridoxine Hydrochloride BP
- Each capsule contains 50mg Ascorbic Acid USP
- Each capsule contains 2mg Thiamine Mononitrate BP
Pharmacology
- Carbonyl Iron has higher bioavailability
- Folic acid is vital for cell division
- Vitamin B Complex is necessary for growth and development
- Vitamin C plays a role in fetal membrane structure
- Zinc is critical for fetal growth and central nervous system development
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: One capsule daily before food or as directed by physician
- Use in children and adolescents upon consultation with a doctor
Interaction
- Carbonyl Iron decreases absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levodopa, levothyroxine, methyldopa, and penicillamine
- Folic Acid interacts with antiepileptics
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredients
- Presence of haemolytic anaemia for iron therapy
Side Effects
- Allergic sensitization reported following oral administration of Folic acid
- Oral iron preparation may cause constipation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid drug use during first trimester if possible
- Prophylaxis justified for remainder of pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- Care should be taken in patients who may develop iron overload
- Iron chelates with tetracycline and absorption may be impaired
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms of Carbonyl Iron overdose include decreased energy, nausea, abdominal pain, tarry stool, weak rapid pulse, fever, coma, seizures
