Pharmacology
Coenzyme form of vitamin B12, cofactor in methionine synthase enzyme, required for myelin integrity, neuronal function, red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, neuronal lipids synthesis, axonal nerve regeneration, axonal transport, neuroprotective activity
Dosage & Administration
- 0.5 mg tablet 3 times daily after meal
- Injection: 1 ampoule (Mecobalamin 500 mcg) daily, administered IM or IV 3 times a week; dosage adjustment based on age and symptoms
- Maintenance therapy: 1 ampoule at 1 to 3 month intervals. Not recommended for use in children
Interaction
Interacts with neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists, omeprazole, colchicine, oral contraceptives; consider when performing blood concentration assays
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or other components of the formulation

- Diaphoresis
- Pain/induration at the site of intramuscular injection; discontinue treatment if necessary
Pregnancy & Lactation
No data available for use in pregnant women & lactating mother; vitamin B12 distributed in breast milk; usually compatible with breast feeding as per the American Academy of Pediatrics
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for aimless use for more than one month unless effective
- Prolonged use of larger doses not recommended for patients handling mercury or mercury compounds
