Pharmacology
Coenzyme form of vitamin B12, cofactor in enzyme methionine synthase, required for myelin integrity, neuronal function, red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, neuronal lipid synthesis, axonal nerve regeneration, axonal transport, neuroprotective activity
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet: 0.5 mg tablet 3 times daily after meal. Dosage adjusted according to age and severity of symptoms
- Injection: Peripheral Neuropathies: 1 ampoule (Mecobalamin 500 mcg) IM or IV 3 times a week. Megaloblastic Anemia: 1 ampoule (Mecobalamin 500 mcg) IM or IV 3 times a week. After 2 months, reduce to a single administration at 1 to 3 month intervals for maintenance therapy. Not recommended for children's use
Interaction
Absorption of vitamin B12 may be reduced by neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists, omeprazole, and colchicine. Serum concentrations may be decreased by oral contraceptives.

Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or other components of the formulation

Pregnancy & Lactation
No data available for use in pregnant women and lactating mothers. However, vitamin B12 is usually compatible with breastfeeding according to The American Academy of Pediatrics.
Precautions & Warnings
Not to be used aimlessly for more than one month unless effective. Prolonged use of larger doses not recommended for patients handling mercury or mercury compounds in occupation
