Pharmacology
- Coenzyme form of vitamin B12
- Cofactor in enzyme methionine synthase
- Required for integrity of myelin
- Promotes axonal transport

Dosage & Administration
- Tablet: 0.5 mg tablet 3 times daily after meal
- Injection: 1 ampoule (Mecobalamin 500 mcg) daily, administered IM or IV 3 times a week
- Dose adjustment based on age and symptoms
- Not recommended for use in children
Interaction
- Reduced absorption by neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists, omeprazole, and colchicine
- Decreased serum concentrations by oral contraceptives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or other components of the formulation
Side Effects
- Dermatologic effects: Rash
- Gastrointestinal effects: Anorexia, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea
- Neurologic effects: Headache
- Other effects: Anaphylactoid reaction, hot sensation, diaphoresis, pain/induration at site of intramuscular injection
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No data available for use in pregnant women & lactating mothers
- Vitamin B12 distributed into breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not recommended for prolonged use in patients handling mercury
- Not to be used aimlessly for more than one month
