Description
- Neural tablet and injection are indicated in the treatment of various neuropathies and other related conditions. The tablet contains mecobalamin, which is a coenzyme form of vitamin B12, while the injection is used for the treatment of peripheral neuropathies and megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency in adults.

Pharmacology
- Mecobalamin is a coenzyme form of vitamin B12
- Required for integrity of myelin and neuronal function
- Promotes axonal transport and has neuroprotective activity
- Functions to transfer methyl groups for the regeneration of methionine from homocysteine
- Required for proper red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis
- Helps in the synthesis of neuronal lipids and regeneration of axonal nerves
Dosage and administration
- 0.5 mg tablet 3 times daily after meal
- Injection: Adult: 1 ampoule (Mecobalamin 500 mcg) daily, administered IM or IV 3 times a week for peripheral neuropathies
- After 2 months of medication, the dose should be reduced to a single administration at 1 to 3 month intervals for maintenance therapy for megaloblastic anemia
- Dosage should be adjusted according to age and severity of symptoms
- Not recommended for use in children
Interaction
- Absorption of vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract may be reduced by neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists, omeprazole, and colchicine
- Serum concentrations may be decreased by use of oral contraceptives
- These interactions should be taken into account when performing assays for blood concentrations
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or other components of the formulation
Side effects
- Dermatologic Effects: Rash
- Gastrointestinal Effects: Anorexia, nausea/vomiting and diarrhea
- Neurologic Effects: Headache
- Others: Anaphylactoid reaction, Hot sensation, Diaphoresis, Pain/induration at the site of intramuscular injection
Pregnancy and lactation
- No data available for use in pregnant women & lactating mothers
- Vitamin B12 is distributed into breast milk and considered usually compatible with breastfeeding by The American Academy of Pediatrics
Precautions and warnings
- Prolonged use of larger doses not recommended for patients handling mercury or mercury compounds
- Not recommended aimlessly for more than one month unless effective
