- Indications:
- Treatment of Folic-Son-Son deficiency
- Megaloblastic anemia
- Anemias of nutritional origins, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood
- Pharmacology: Conversion of folic acid to active forms for erythropoiesis, nucleic acid synthesis, amino acid interconversion, tRNA methylation
- Dosage & Administration:
- Adults:
- Initial: 5 mg daily for 4 months
- Maintenance: 5 mg every 1-7 days
- Children:
- Up to 1 year: 500 mcg/kg daily
- Over 1 year: Same as adult dose
- Adults:
- Interaction: None reported
- Contraindications: Previous intolerance to the drug
- Side Effects: Generally well tolerated. Gastro-intestinal disturbances may occur. Rare hypersensitivity reactions.
- Pregnancy & Lactation: No special precautions known
- Precautions & Warnings: Use with caution in patients with folate dependent tumours. Avoid giving alone or with inadequate amounts of vitamin B12 for undiagnosed megaloblastic anaemia.
