Refolic 5 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Refolic deficiency
• Megaloblastic anemia
• Anemias of nutritional origins, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood.

Pharmacology

• Folic acid converted to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate by dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR)
• Needed for erythropoiesis, nucleic acid synthesis, amino acid interconversion, tRNA methylation, and formate generation and utilization
• Can normalize high homocysteine levels via methionine synthetase with vitamin B12 cofactor

Dosage & Administration

• Adults: Initially 5 mg daily for 4 months, maintenance 5 mg every 1-7 days
• Children: Up to 1 year 500 mcg/kg daily, Over 1 year same as adult dose

• Previous intolerance to the drug

Side Effects

• Well tolerated, gastrointestinal disturbances may occur, rare hypersensitivity reactions

Precautions & Warnings

• Use with caution in patients with folate dependent tumors
• Avoid giving alone or in inadequate amounts of vitamin B12 for undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia
