Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients not on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with low birth weight

Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • Has a 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO
  • Apparent molecular weight of about 30,400 daltons

Administration

  • Preparation and Administration guidelines

Interaction

  • Potentiation by the therapeutic administration of a haematinic agent like ferrous sulphate

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Patients with Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

Side Effects

  • Adverse reactions in Epoetin treated patients
  • Specific adverse reactions for patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients, cancer patients on chemotherapy, surgery patients, and premature infants

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use in pregnant chronic renal failure patients
  • Not recommended for pregnant or lactating surgical patients in an autologous blood predonation programme
  • Caution in nursing women

Overdose Effects

  • Possible effects of Epoetin overdosage
  • Management with discontinuation or reduction of Epoetin dosage
