Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia due to Zidovudine in HIV-infected patients
  • Treatment of anemia due to the effects of concomitant myelosuppressive chemotherapy
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with low birth weight and gestational age

Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • Has a 165 amino acid sequence identical to that of human urinary EPO
  • Apparent molecular weight of erythropoietin is about 30,400 daltons

Dosage

  • Evaluation of iron stores and nutritional factors before and during treatment
  • Monitoring hemoglobin levels frequently when initiating or adjusting therapy
  • Dose adjustment based on hemoglobin levels and responsiveness to ESA
  • Different dosing recommendations for CKD patients on dialysis and not on dialysis, and Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients

Administration

  • Preparation and administration precautions for Erythropoietin alfa
  • Visual inspection for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration

Interaction

  • Potentiation of Epoetin effect by haematinic agents such as ferrous sulphate

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

  • Adverse reactions in patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients, Cancer Patients on Chemotherapy, Surgery Patients, and Premature infants
