Indications
- Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Treatment of anemia in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
- Treatment of anemia due to concomitant myelosuppressive chemotherapy
- Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
- Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with specific birth weight and gestational age
Description
- Nipotin is recombinant human Erythropoietin (EPO) expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
- Has a 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO
- Apparent molecular weight of erythropoietin is about 30,400 daltons
Dosage
- Evaluate iron status in all patients before and during treatment
- Monitor hemoglobin levels at least weekly until stable, then at least monthly
- Administer intravenously or subcutaneously
- Starting dose for adults with CKD on dialysis: 50 to 100 units/kg 3 times weekly
- Starting dose for pediatric patients with CKD on dialysis: 50 units/kg 3 times weekly
Administration
- Do not shake or freeze
- Protect syringe from light
- Inspect visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration
- Discard unused portions
Interaction
- Effect may be potentiated by simultaneous therapeutic administration of haematinic agents
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
- Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following Erythropoietin treatment
Side Effects
- Hypertension, arthralgia, muscle spasm, pyrexia, dizziness, medical device malfunction, vascular occlusion, upper respiratory tract infection in CKD patients
- Pyrexia, cough, rash, injection site irritation in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
- Nausea, vomiting, myalgia, arthralgia, stomatitis, weight decrease, leukopenia, bone pain, rash, hyperglycemia, headache, depression, etc. in cancer patients on chemotherapy
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Reproduction toxicology observed in animal studies
- Caution is advised for nursing women
Overdose Effects
- Nipotin overdosage can cause hemoglobin levels above desired level
- Severe hypertension observed following overdose with ESAs

- Store at 2°C to 8°C
- Do not freeze or shake
- Protect from light
