Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells

Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with specific birth weight and gestational age

Dosage

  • Evaluation of iron stores and nutritional factors
  • Monitoring of hemoglobin levels
  • Dosing adjustments based on hemoglobin levels and response
  • Different starting doses for patients with CKD on dialysis and not on dialysis
  • Starting dose for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients

Administration

Contraindications

  • Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

Side Effects

  • Adverse reactions in patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients, Cancer Patients on Chemotherapy, Surgery Patients, and Premature Infants
  • Variety of common adverse reactions observed in different patient groups

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited studies in pregnant women and reproductive toxicology in animals
  • Caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
  • Consideration of benefit to the fetus and child versus therapy with Erythropoietin alfa

Overdose Effects
