Description
- Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
- Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
- Molecular weight: about 30,400 daltons
- Indistinguishable from human urinary EPO
Indications
- Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Treatment of anemia in Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
- Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing elective, noncardiac, nonvascular surgery
- Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with specific birth weight and gestational age
Dosage
- Evaluation of iron stores and nutritional factors
- Monitoring of hemoglobin levels
- Dosing adjustments based on hemoglobin levels and response
- Different starting doses for patients with CKD on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Starting dose for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients
- Dose adjustments for cancer patients on chemotherapy
- Administration in premature infants with specific dosing regimen
Administration
- Preparation and administration guidelines
- Do not shake or use frozen Erythropoietin alfa
- Visual inspection for particulate matter and discoloration before administration
- Discard unused portions of Erythropoietin alfa
Interaction
- Potential potentiation by simultaneous therapeutic administration of a haematinic agent such as ferrous sulphate when deficiency state exists
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
- Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin
Side Effects
- Adverse reactions in patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected Patients, Cancer Patients on Chemotherapy, Surgery Patients, and Premature Infants
- Variety of common adverse reactions observed in different patient groups
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Limited studies in pregnant women and reproductive toxicology in animals
- Caution in use during pregnancy and lactation
- Consideration of benefit to the fetus and child versus therapy with Erythropoietin alfa
Overdose Effects

- Potential for increased hemoglobin levels and severe hypertension in cases of overdose
