Indications
- Post-menopausal osteoporosis
- Renal osteodystrophy

Pharmacology
- Active metabolite of vitamin D3
- Promotes intestinal absorption of calcium
- Regulates bone mineralization

Dosage & Administration
- Optimal daily dose determined based on serum calcium level
- Recommended doses for post-menopausal osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, hypoparathyroidism, and rickets
- Intravenous initial dose for hypocalcemia and/or secondary hyperparathyroidism
Interaction
- Increased risk of hypercalcemia with thiazide diuretics
- Careful dosage determination for patients undergoing digitalis treatment
- Magnesium-containing drugs causing hypermagnesemia
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
- Diseases associated with hypercalcemia
Side Effects
- Early side effects like weakness, headache, nausea
- Late side effects like polyuria, anorexia, weight loss
- Occasional mild pain on injection
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity in humans
- Use during pregnancy if benefits outweigh potential risk
- Breastfeeding while monitoring serum calcium levels
Precautions & Warnings
- Excessive dosage induces hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria
- Caution in patients on digitalis
- Rebound effect on discontinuation
- Withholding vitamin D and its derivatives during treatment
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended dosage for adults and pediatric patients
- Different dosage for pediatric patients less than 3 years of age
- No dosage adjustments for elderly
Overdose Effects
- Causes hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, and hyperphosphatemia
- Treatment involves discontinuation, low calcium diet, and withdrawal of calcium supplements
