Indications
- Post-menopausal osteoporosis
- Renal osteodystrophy
- Postsurgical hypoparathyroidism
- Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism
- Pseudohypoparathyroidism
- Secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with moderate to severe chronic renal failure (pre-dialysis)
- Vitamin D dependent rickets
Pharmacology
- Active metabolite of vitamin D3
- Promotes intestinal absorption of calcium
- Regulates bone mineralization
- Stimulation effects on osteoblastic activity in the skeleton
Dosage & Administration
- Optimal daily dose must be carefully determined for each patient based on serum calcium level
- Recommended doses for different conditions
- Intravenous initial dose depending on the severity of the hypocalcemia and/or secondary hyperparathyroidism
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics increase the risk of hypercalcemia
- Careful dosage determination for patients undergoing treatment with digitalis
- Magnesium containing drugs may cause hypermagnesemia
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
- Contraindicated in diseases associated with hypercalcemia
Side Effects
- Early and late side effects of Liquical injection
- Observations of occasional mild pain on injection
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity in humans
- Usage during pregnancy if benefits outweigh potential risk
- Monitoring of serum calcium levels for mother and infant during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Excessive dosage induces hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria
- Cautious administration to patients on digitalis
- Appropriate titration downward to a maintenance dose recommended upon discontinuation
- Hypercalcemia lead to vascular and soft-tissue calcification
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended dosage in adults, pediatric patients and elderly
- Different dosage for pediatric patients less than 3 years of age
Overdose Effects
- Hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria and hyperphosphatemia
- Treatment of hypercalcemia consists of immediate discontinuation of Liquical therapy, low calcium diet and withdrawal of calcium supplements
