Indications
- Treats thiamine deficiency manifestations
- Used for Beriberi and Wernick's encephalopathy
- Neuritis associated with pregnancy and pellagra
Pharmacology
- Coenzyme for decarboxylation of α-ketoglutaric acid
- Affects peripheral nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system
- Necessary for optimal growth of infants and children
- Not stored in the body, regularly lost from tissues during deficiency
Dosage & Administration
- Prophylaxis: 3 to 10 mg daily
- Mild chronic deficiency: 10 to 25 mg daily
- Severe deficiency: 200 to 300 mg daily
Interaction
- Acts synergistically with other vitamins of the B-complex group
Contraindications
- Increased risk of anaphylaxis with repeated parenteral administration
- Vitamin B1 injection should not be given intravenously except in the case of comatose patients
Side Effects
- Rarely causes adverse effects when given orally
- Anaphylactic reactions have occurred after intravenous administration of large doses in sensitive patients
