Indications
- Reduction of elevated TC
- Reduction of LDL-C
- Increase of HDL-C
- Treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia

- Treatment of very high serum triglyceride levels
Pharmacology
- Preparation of Nicotinic acid
- Lowers VLDL and LDL levels
- Lowers total cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- Raises HDL levels
- Treatment of cardiovascular disease
- Treatment of hyperlipidemias
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose: 500 mg tablet at bedtime for 1 to 4 weeks
- Maintenance dose: 1000 mg to 2000 mg once daily at bedtime
- Not recommended to exceed 2000 mg daily
- As directed by the registered physician
Interaction
- Potentiation of ganglionic blocking agents and vasoactive drugs
- Metabolic clearance affected by concomitant aspirin
- Binding to bile acid-binding resins
- Recommended interval between ingestion of resins and Niacin administration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Niacin or any component
- Significant or unexplained hepatic dysfunction
- Active peptic ulcer disease
- Arterial bleeding

- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Increased serum blood glucose

- Not recommended due to lack of information
Precautions & Warnings
- Control of hyperlipidemia with appropriate diet, exercise, and weight reduction
- Close observation for patients with past history of jaundice, hepatobiliary disease, or peptic ulcer
- Frequent monitoring of liver function tests and blood glucose
- Caution for diabetic patients
- Caution for patients with unstable angina or in the acute phase of MI
- Caution for patients predisposed to gout
- Monitoring of platelet count and prothrombin time for patients on anticoagulants
- Monitoring of phosphorus levels for patients at risk
Overdose Effects
- Supportive measures in the event of overdosage
- Symptoms may include nausea, dizziness, itching, vomiting, upset stomach, and flushing
