Description
- Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) indicated for preventing & treating scurvy, aiding in healing wounds, forming collagen in connective tissues, aiding in iron absorption, production of hemoglobin & red blood cells, preventing viral & bacterial infections, treating the common cold, promoting healthy capillaries, gums & teeth. It is an essential nutrient for tissue growth & repair, adrenal gland function, enhanced immunity, healthy hair & skin, and overall good health.
Dosage & Administration
- Oral tablet administration: 1 tablet daily for scurvy prevention, 1-2 tablets daily for scurvy treatment, 1-2 tablets daily for reducing stroke risk in the elderly, maximum safe dose is 2000 mg daily in divided doses. Oral sachet administration: 1 sachet daily. Parenteral administration: Vitamin C is usually administered orally, can be administered IM, IV, or subcutaneously. Utilization is best after IM administration. Inspect parenteral products for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration.

Pharmacology
- Ascorbic Acid is an essential nutrient required for tissue growth & repair, adrenal gland function, enhanced immunity, and healthy gums. It acts as an antioxidant providing protection against pollution and infection. It is a necessary coenzyme for wound healing, drug metabolism, and metabolism of cholesterol & folic acid.
Interaction
- Incompatible with aminophylline, bleomycin, erythromycin, lactobionate, nafcillin, nitrofurantoin sodium, conjugated estrogen, sodium bicarbonate, sulfafurazole diethanolamine, chloramphenicol sodium succinate, chlorthiazide sodium, and hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Enhances apparent half-life of paracetamol and iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
Side Effects
- Mega-doses may cause diarrhea, abdominal bloating, harmful iron over-absorption, hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, hemolysis, and fetal abortion in pregnant women taking more than 5 gm/day.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe in normal doses for pregnant women, but intake of 5 gm or more may cause abortion. Safe during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- Ingestion of megadose during pregnancy has resulted in scurvy in neonates. Contradicted for patients with hyperoxaluria. Can give false positive reactions in certain analytical tests.
