  • Parenteral administration when oral is not feasible or malabsorption is suspected
  • Utilization reportedly best after IM administration
  • Intravenous injection recommended into a large volume parenteral to minimize adverse reactions
  • Average protective dose for adults: 70 to 150 mg daily
  • Recommended doses for wound healing and burns

Interaction

  • Incompatibility with specific drugs in solution
  • Enhances apparent half-life of paracetamol
  • Enhances iron absorption from gastrointestinal tract

Side Effects

  • Little toxicity with mega-doses causing diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and iron over-absorption
  • Potential harmful effects in patients with specific conditions
  • Risk of hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, and hemolysis in certain conditions
  • Risk of fetal abortion in pregnant women taking more than 5 gm/day

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Ingestion of megadose during pregnancy has resulted in neonatal scurvy
  • Contraindicated for patients with hyperoxaluria
