Interaction
- Incompatible in solution with certain drugs
- Increases the apparent half-life of paracetamol
- Enhances iron absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
Side Effects
- Little toxicity in normal doses
- Mega-doses may cause diarrhoea, abdominal bloating, iron over-absorption
- Harmful in patients with certain conditions
- Pregnant woman taking more than 5 gm/day may suffer fetal abortion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe in normal doses for pregnant women
- Daily intake of 5 gm or more reported to have caused abortion
- Safe during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Ingestion of megadose (more than 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy has resulted in scurvy in neonates
- Contraindicated for patients with hyperoxaluria
- Reactive substance in the redox system, can give rise to false positive reactions in certain tests
